The Department of Mathematics, like the University itself, is relatively small and friendly. Mathematics is a satisfying and compelling subject to study at university level. If you enjoy mathematics, and want to develop your mathematical skills in a way that will enable you to use them in the real world, then Bradford may well be just the place for you to study.
Our BSc (Hons) Computational Mathematics is designed to meet the needs of students wishing to gain an understanding of a blend of mathematical topics together with related areas of computing which are selected from the Department of Computing's professionally accredited courses.
This will provide you with the opportunity of instilling not only a deeper understanding of advanced mathematical fields but also their utilization in a variety of application processes. The problem-solving nature of the course will encourage the acquisition of skills in critical thinking, deduction and logical analysis, and the presentation of mathematical/computational ideas in both written and verbal forms. You will find this serves you well in a wide range of` careers; particularly those where independent study skills and a familiarity with IT are welcomed. The programme can be studied over four years to incorporate an optional placement year in supervised practice taken between the second and third years in an industrial, commercial or educative organisation. This enables you to extend and apply your learning and gain practical experience which is highly valued by employers, and also gives you the opportunity to acquire the Diploma of Industrial Studies.
The emphasis on practical applications of mathematics is also reflected in the research work of the staff associated with the Department, much of which has direct relevance to real-life scientific and engineering problems. Areas of expertise currently range from, for example, the mechanics of sophisticated solid media, stochastic processes, reliability, operational research, particle kinetics in electro-magnetic fields, statistical analysis and data mining in astrophysical images to simulation based design including geometric design, computer based physical analysis and design optimization.

Our current Open Day schedule is:
On our open days you will have the opportunity to see the Department and the University campus. You will also have the opportunity to meet current students and academic staff. There will be a presentation which highlights the industry around our courses and career opportunities. If you would like to come to one of our open days, see what we offer and have a good look around, please email ugadmissions@scim.brad.ac.uk or call 01274 235963.
